Mastermind Groups – Outgrow your environmental limitations

Are you a person with great ideas and a big dream? Do you want to become the best person that you are capable of? Do you want to create success for yourself and your loved ones?

Well, you might have the best intentions, but you’re still might be doomed to fail.

Because of the environment that you are in.

One of the most important things I have learned from all my personal development endeavors is that you will always adapt to your environment, meaning to the people that are closest to you. You’ll integrate into your family, your community and your workplace.

Jim Rohn said: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

If you are not surrounded by like-minded people you might even give up your dreams altogether. That’s what can happen in a non-supportive environment.

Does this mean that you can’t be successful?

No, of course not.

There are tons of people that started out in environments that didn’t support their hopes and dreams. And they still were able to get out of their current situation and be successful, sometimes successful beyond dreams.

So, what do you do if your best friends are not as driven as you are and they don’t move you forward?

It’s critically important that you surround yourself with people that support you on your way. People who see greatness in you. A lot of times I will work with people over a weekend, and they will go home. After the weekend they will reintegrate themselves into their homes, in their communities, in their workplaces.

If these people are not as successful as you want to become, it’s not the best environment to be in. And at some point, we are all in this place when we start to grow.

So, think about it for a moment. Is your environment the best vehicle to grow yourself? Are your close relationships supporting you to become your best?

Most of us will say NO!

So, what you need to do is to build an environment of people who support you to become your very best, who support you in following your dreams, who actually hold you accountable for what you said you’re going to do. People who see greatness in you. People who do it themselves.

But how do you build an environment where only the best is expected? An environment that takes you to the top? An environment where you can learn and grow?

People say it is very lonely at the top.

So, if you’re serious about your success, surround yourself with people who support you, who want to see you succeed.

This will speed up your progress and you’ll get new insights on your way.

How do you this?

Well, my friend, you need a mastermind group.

What is a mastermind group?

Here is the definition from Wikipedia:

“A mastermind group is a peer-to-peer mentoring concept used to help members solve their problems with input and advice from the other group members. The concept was coined in 1925 by author Napoleon Hill in his book The Law of Success and described in more detail in his 1937 book, Think and Grow Rich.”

It is an incredible opportunity for entrepreneurs and small business owners to collaborate and connect with their peers in a safe environment. Here you can openly speak about your dreams and you’ll find people that encourage you on your way and support you in what you do.

In Napoleon Hill’s own words:

“A mastermind alliance involves two or more people who work in perfect harmony for the attainment of a definite purpose.”

How does a mastermind work?

A mastermind group is a group of people that meet regularly to help each other to tackle challenges and problems together. They support each other, share connections they have, give advice or help to raise new ideas. Sometimes they even do business with each other. It’s a peer-to-peer mentoring.

And the best mastermind events also offer business, marketing and sales management training and financial education and invite mentors to the group.

Mastermind programs are often 12-month programs that meet 3 to 4 times a year and bring in professional speakers and mentors that guide the process. During the year they usually meet once a week in a virtual meeting online. They brainstorm ideas, work out actionable plans and hold each other accountable.

What to look for in a mastermind group?

The quality of a mastermind depends on the quality of the people in the room and the quality of the trainers and mentors.

A great mastermind program is able to host events with world-class trainers and mentors, high-demand speakers who have commanded the attention of hundreds of thousands of people through their careers, and many more.

What Does a Mastermind event Look Like?

A mastermind event is a conference in the spirit of a mastermind group.

Mastermind events are usually multi-day events that offer a combination of brainstorming in a group setting and education from mentors and world-class speakers.  They offer roundtable discussion, where the members learn from each other as much as they do from the speakers and mentors. They have their focus on complex problem-solving.

The best mastermind events have a built-in process that is supported by training and of course mastermind sessions in small groups, where the mastermind members brainstorm specific situations of their peers.

Each member of the mastermind group has dedicated time to present and share their successes and business opportunities and gets hands-on advice and feedback from their peers.

There are mastermind groups whose members are all in the same industry and have a deep knowledge and understanding of each other’s needs and there are also mastermind groups which are formed by a variety of different professions. The advantage of these masterminds is that you get a variety of ideas that you would never get in a “uniform” mastermind due to the variety of backgrounds.

I personally have participated in mastermind groups with people of all kinds of trades. There were actors, authors, coaches, marketers, construction builder, teachers. People from all walks of lives and I was deeply impressed by the ideas that were born in these groups.

Independently from which type of mastermind group you choose, a mastermind group requires commitment from every member of the group and the willingness to both give and receive advice and ideas. It is important the members of the group act in integrity and support each other with honesty and respect. Mastermind group members act as catalysts for growth, devil’s advocates, and supportive colleagues. This is the essence and value of mastermind groups.

Everything that happens during a mastermind event is treated with confidentiality.

A successful mastermind group will help you get unstuck in whatever situation you are in. They will hold you accountable to your goals and plans and they will do some straight talking with you if you don’t follow through and don’t do what you say. A mastermind group is not the place to whine and complain. Your peer group will not allow you to go down this street. Instead, they will help you to stay focused on your most important business goals.

The beauty of Mastermind Groups is that their members raise the bar by challenging each other to create goals and plans and hold you accountable for implementing these goals. The members act as catalysts for each others growth.
